Audio and Download Versions
Audiobooks
are single-voiced readings of the novels. I have only licensed
them as unabridged versions, although these cost more to the
consumer, because I do not feel the Falco novels in particular
could be satisfactorily cut down. Various actors read the
different books. People ask what choice I have in the reader:
sometimes I am sent tapes to listen to and can comment on my
preference, though availability is crucial. The books have to be
recorded at the right time to coincide with publication of the
printed edition.
You will find details of what has been licensed under each
title on our
Publications page. They are often available in libraries or
you can buy your own copies. The earlier books may not be easily
available (though we are looking into the possibilities for new
licenses). Downloadable versions of the audiobooks are available
these days.
Visually impaired people in England can get special audio
copies (read by a different actor) from the RNIB. You have to be
sight-impaired and use a special device.
Downloads: E-Books
Because I don’t deal with the
e-book companies myself (my print publishers do that), I do not
have full information on who produces each title but on the
Publications page you can find out what has been licensed and
take it from there.
What I do know is this:
- In the UK all titles are licensed as e-books from
2011, including ‘enhancements’ in each book
- In America only titles that are currently licensed in
print form, including reissues of older books, will be
available. Where a title is currently ‘out of print’ I will
not allow an e-book-only version because that may affect me from
selling a new license for print editions
- Prices vary: shop around
- There have been instances where books have been poorly
scanned by the retailers. This is unacceptable. If this
happens to you, you want either a free replacement or your
money back. First notify the retailer; they should have a place on
their website where you can do this. If this doesn’t work,
and quickly, notify the original print publisher. Then tell me the details so I can keep
track, and if needs be apply pressure.
Piracy
A reader took up this point to berate me for ‘allowing’
internet sites that advertise unlicensed downloads of my work. I
don’t allow it. When I notice it happening I will go through
procedures an author has to follow.
I can only point out that downloading unauthorised editions
is piracy, a blatant form of theft. Anyone who does download
unlicensed files is a receiver of stolen goods. When teenagers
did this with music, they and their parents were astonished to
receive visits from the police. There is no reason why the same
should not happen with pirated audiobooks and e-books. You have
been warned.
